Meet Dr. Lynn Roberts, Reproductive Justice Scholar and Activist.
When I photographed each person, I asked them to chose a spot for the shots that is important to them. Lynn chose the statue of JM Sims. Lynn is a womanist and a scholar, but identifies first as an activist concerned about the world and all its inhabitants. She chose this spot because James Marion Sims is remembered as the creator of modern gynecology. However, what people don't remember and goes widely unacknowledged is that his findings were developed through torturous experimentation on enslaved African American women. (Along with allot of other injustices against women, especially women of color. Just google the names on her sign.) I was so happy that Lynn gave me the gift of turning our photo shoot into an action against injustice, and we created this amazing image together.
Dr. Roberts’ current activism and scholarship examines the intersection of race, class and gender and its influence on health disparities and reproductive health policies; as well as the impact of models of collaborative inquiry and teaching on civic and political engagement.
