I want you to meet "GA" she is an Activist and Organizer for the Mexico Solidarity Movement, her name is not really Guerrera Azteca, but we chose not to use her real name, to protect her identity. She is photographed here with the mask she wears during protests, for the same reason.
GA is a Mexican activist, organizer, and longtime supporter of Somos Los Otros NY. She is a part of the Mexico solidarity movement that developed in response to the disappearance of 43 Ayotzinapa students in Iguala, Guerrero on September 26, 2014. Their community based efforts include a march led by the parents of the disappeared on the United Nations on April 26th 2015 and the first major action against the Merida Initiative, in front of the gates of the White House during Enrique Pena Nieto's visit on January 6, 2015.
Naturally, these types of action, and spreading the awareness of the type of human rights atrocities that occur in Mexico, are not too popular with the people in charge over there. When we met, GA, who is a warm, kind, and soft soul, she thanked me for choosing her, and her movement to be represented in the project, because of how important it is to continue to spread the word, and keep the message in the news media here in america, it is because their actions are gaining media attention abroad that people are safe, if the issues in Mexico fall out of media favor, more people will lose their lives, potentially including those who fight to spread the word, and their families.
