He's a survivor and gay rights activist to end conversion therapy. he was 16 when he came out to his father about being gay, and he was then put through a process known as conversion therapy, where a therapist works to "turn you straight" Mathew saw 4 differnet therapiests in 4 different states for the next 5 years of his life. It didn't work, and today, the 27-year-old is open and proud, and since coming out in 2012, Mathew has been a strong national advocate for banning these destructive practices. Mathew and the #BornPerfect team have promised to end conversion therapy in all 50 states by 2019. Thus far conversion therapy bans have passed in three states and Washington, D.C. Through his advocacy, Mathew shares his personal and traumatic testimony of his conversion therapy experiences, yet in the process, has also reconciled with his family, former conversion therapist and high school bully.
