We Use Art to Support Movement Ideas
IThou is an arts organization that supports social movement through art. We are founded on philosopher Martin Buber’s assertion that when we stop seeing each other as "I" and "You," we can acknowledge a space for relatedness that bonds us together. Our art events endeavor to create that space.
Using art, experiential community events and artist/activist talks, our art activations encourage new audiences to participate in transformative conversations around some of today’s most pressing social issues: racism, the privatization of prisons, immigration and deportation, Gentrification, etc.
by engageing new communities and individuals that would not normally be reached we create education about, and support for causes that create a world that works for everyone.
What does "IThou" Mean?
Human life finds its meaning in relationships. This is the major theme of philosopher Martin Buber’s 1923 book “Ich und Du.” Buber asserts that when we stop seeing each other as "I" and "You" we can acknowledge a space for relatedness that bonds us together. There is no difference between I and You. We are simply one: IThou.
What is an IThou Arts Activation (ITAA)
An ITAA is an art related event that focuses on supporting a movement or movements through artistic expression, engages a new audience, and provides the space for that new audience to connect directly with movements. This opens up the space for new individuals and new communities to contribute to the movement in new ways.
